- $5,000,000 Permanent Injury-Midtrial Settlement (Illinois): Medicines save lives. There is no doubt about it. But, when used improperly, they can also cause serious injury. Too much, too often, or the wrong kind of medication can be toxic. In this case, the patient was given a drug to help with his arthritis. The drug was very powerful but well-known to be toxic to the kidneys if used for too long. To prevent such injury, the doctor is required to monitor the patient’s kidney function while on the drug, and stop the drug at the first sign of kidney problems. In this case, the doctor failed to monitor kidney function and the patient lost both kidneys.
- $3,500,000 Brain Injury Lawsuit-Pretrial Settlement (Illinois); One way that medication mistakes occur is through nursing error. In this case, a nurse misread a doctor’s order to give a baby .4ml of IV nutrition as being 4.0 ml. The subsequent overdose of the food (Lipids) caused the baby’s heart to stop. As a result she lost a leg and suffered a serious brain injury
- $1,175,000 Pretrial Settlement (Illinois): When someone has severely clogged arteries of the heart, they are at risk for a heart attack. To prevent that from happening, doctors will sometimes use a device that is like a balloon to widen the person’s artery (angioplasty) and then put in an artificial tube (stent) to hold the artery in its open position. A man with coronary artery disease was admitted to the hospital for an angioplasty and stent procedure. Because of the stents, the man was placed on anticoagulation medication. During this time, he was given large doses – in excess of manufacture recommendations – of medications which cause confusion or drowsiness. He was not monitored closely and fell, injuring his head. He suffered fractures of the skull. Because he was on anticoagulation, he bled significantly. He died from these injuries.
